The History of Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii, Child Abuse Prevention Planning Council and Child Abuse Prevention Month
Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii was started by a group of human service providers who became convinced the community needed a voice dedicated to child abuse and neglect. In 1982, this group became the Hawaii Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America and in 1987, became a participating agency of Aloha United Way.
Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii is a private non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse in all its forms and to ensuring that every child in the state of Hawaii is able to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.
All programs are designed for the general public and center around providing parents and caregivers with the support and skills they need to perform as effectively as possible.
Our mission is to prevent child abuse through education, public awareness and advocacy which promote positive parenting and healthy families where children are valued and loved.
As part of a national movement to stop child abuse and neglect before it occurs, Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii, Department of Health, and the Child Abuse Prevention Planning Council, a committee of private, state and federal organizations, sponsor Child Abuse Prevention Month during April each year. April is devoted to the issue of child abuse prevention because of its high incidence of child abuse.
Child Abuse Prevention Month has been observed each April since its first presidential proclamation in 1983. Since that time, millions of Americans have participated each year in this crucial public awareness campaign.
Although awareness of child abuse and neglect needs to be a year-round commitment, concentrating our efforts in April serves to focus public attention on the positive solutions to a devastating problem. According to the State of Hawaii Department of Human Services January 2014 Databook, there were about 4,055 reports of child abuse and neglect in Calendar Year 2013 reported to Child Protective Services, of which 1,361 were confirmed reports.
Through a wide range of activities during April 2015, Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii, Department of Health and our many Partners for Prevention on the Child Abuse Prevention Planning Council offer everyone an opportunity to join this movement. We all must work together to make this vision a reality. Please join your voice with ours to prevent child abuse and neglect in the state of Hawaii. Come and participate in the Pinwheels for Prevention Planting March 29 from 2-4 PM at the State Capitol, Teddy Bear Drive and Family Resource Fair April 25 from 10 AM – 2 PM at Windward Mall Center Court, and many other events including Family Story Times.
